8h01.comAmerican Beauty (1999) American Beauty is a 1999 American
black comedy-drama film written by Alan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes in his feature directorial debut. The film stars Kevin Spacey as Lester Burnham, a middle-aged advertising executive who has a midlife crisis when he becomes infatuated with his
teenage daughter’s best friend, Angela (Mena Suvari). Annette Bening co-stars as Lester’s materialistic wife, Carolyn, and Thora Birch plays their insecure daughter, Jane. Wes Bentley, Chris Cooper, and Allison Janney also feature in supporting roles. The film is a satire of the American middle class and its perception of beauty and personal satisfaction. It explores themes such as romantic and paternal love, sexuality, materialism, self-liberation, and redemption. The film is narrated by Lester from beyond the grave, as he recounts the events leading up to his death. The film begins with Lester’s voice-over introducing himself and his family. He reveals that he will die soon, but does not know how or why. The film then flashes back to one year earlier, showing Lester’s mundane and unhappy life. He hates his job and is unhappily married to Carolyn, a neurotic and ambitious real estate agent. Their daughter Jane is a depressed and self-conscious
teenager who despises her parents. Lester’s life changes when he meets Angela, Jane’s cheerleader friend, at a high
school basketball game. He becomes obsessed with her and fantasizes about her constantly. He also befriends Ricky Fitts, the new neighbor who lives next door with his abusive father Frank, a retired Marine colonel, and his catatonic mother Barbara. Ricky is a rebellious and artistic
teenager who secretly films everything around him with a camcorder. He also sells marijuana, which he uses as a cover for his catering jobs. Lester decides to quit his job and blackmails his boss for $60,000. He buys his dream car, a 1970 Pontiac Firebird, and starts working out. He also begins smoking marijuana and listening to rock music. He develops a more confident and carefree attitude, which annoys Carolyn and Jane. Carolyn, meanwhile, has an affair with Buddy Kane, a successful real estate rival whom she admires. Jane starts dating Ricky after he shows her his video collection, which includes a footage of a plastic bag dancing in the wind. Ricky tells Jane that he finds beauty in everything, even in death. He also reveals that he was once sent to a mental hospital for falsely confessing to killing his father’s friend. Jane falls in love with Ricky and plans to run away with him. Angela becomes jealous of Jane’s relationship with Ricky and tries to seduce Lester. Lester finally gets the chance to be alone with Angela when Carolyn and Jane leave for a cheerleading competition. However, when Angela tells Lester that she is a
virgin, he realizes that she is not the confident and experienced girl he imagined. He backs off and comforts her instead. Angela appreciates Lester’s kindness and sees him in a new light. Frank becomes suspicious of Ricky’s relationship with Lester after seeing them smoking marijuana together. He mistakenly assumes that they are having a homosexual affair. He confronts Ricky in his room and beats him up. Ricky fights back and tells Frank that he hates him. He then packs his bags and leaves with Jane. Before they go, Ricky tells Lester that he is glad to have met him. Carolyn returns home after breaking up with Buddy. She finds a gun in her closet and decides to kill Lester for ruining her life. She drives to their house while listening to Bobby Darin’s version of “Don’t Rain on My Parade”. Meanwhile, Lester sits on the couch in the living room and looks at a family photo of happier times. He smiles and says that he is grateful for every moment of his life. Frank enters the house through the back door and finds Lester in the living room. He kisses him on the lips, but Lester gently rejects him. Frank is shocked and ashamed by his own actions. He hears Carolyn’s car approaching and runs away. Carolyn enters the house with the gun and heads to the living room. She sees Lester lying on the couch with a bullet wound in his head and
blood splattered on the wall behind him. She breaks down in tears. The film ends with Lester’s voice-over saying that he is not angry or sad about his death. He says that he can see his whole life as if it were one long movie. He says that there is so much beauty in the world that sometimes he feels like he can’t take it. He says that he wishes he could tell everyone that they don’t have to be afraid of anything or anyone. He says that he is looking forward to seeing what will happen next. Parental Guide American Beauty is rated R for strong sexuality, language, violence and drug content. The film contains several scenes of nudity, sexual innuendo, and sexual activity, including Lester’s fantasies of Angela, Carolyn and Buddy’s affair, and Lester and Angela’s near-sex scene. The film also depicts Lester’s
masturbation, Ricky’s voyeurism, and Frank’s repressed homosexuality. The film has frequent use of profanity, including f-words and other vulgar terms. The film shows Lester’s murder in graphic detail, as well as Frank’s physical and verbal abuse of Ricky. The film also portrays the use of marijuana by several characters, as well as Ricky’s drug dealing. The film has a dark and cynical tone, with themes of death, suicide, adultery, and disillusionment. The film may be disturbing or upsetting for some viewers, especially younger ones. The film is not suitable for children or teens under 17.
